After days of violent clashes in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, the leader of the 444 Brigade militia, Mahmoud Hamza, has been released. The clashes resulted in the death of 55 people and the closure of the city's only civilian airport.

Hamza's release came as part of a government-sponsored ceasefire agreement that also calls for the withdrawal of fighters from the front lines. Videos circulating on social media showed Hamza surrounded by his fighters at his headquarters south of Tripoli.

The clashes in Tripoli highlight the ongoing power struggle among various militias in Libya since the 2011 uprising against former dictator Moamer Kadhafi.
