US Warship and Commercial Vessels Targeted in Red Sea Attack Amid Escalating Maritime Tensions

A US warship and multiple commercial vessels came under attack in the Red Sea on Sunday, raising concerns about escalating maritime tensions amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The USS Carney, known for intercepting missiles and drones, was targeted in the attack, but it remains unclear if there was any damage. At least one commercial vessel, owned by a British company linked to Israeli businessman Danny Ungar, was also struck.

While the source of the military fire has not been confirmed, Yemen's Houthi rebels have previously threatened to target ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel's ground incursion into Gaza. The USS Carney had previously intercepted drones and cruise missiles launched by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. In response to the attacks, Leon Panetta, former Obama CIA director and defense secretary, called for a more aggressive approach in dealing with those firing missiles at US forces in the Middle East.

The growing maritime conflict poses a threat to global shipping, with previous attacks and the current Israeli airstrikes raising the risk of further seaborne attacks. The Houthis have seized multiple vessels linked to Israel in the Red Sea in recent weeks, including a vehicle transport ship and a vessel briefly seized by gunmen. This recent attack on the US warship and commercial vessels marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
