The Treasury Department's statement asserts that these funds contribute to conflict and terrorism throughout the region. Despite these allegations, a representative from Sepehr Energy declined to comment on the matter when approached by the Associated Press. The U.S. sanctions aim to restrict access to American property and bank accounts for the targeted individuals and entities, effectively preventing them from conducting business with Americans.

Brian E. Nelson, the Treasury's under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, emphasized that Iran engages in illicit finance schemes to generate funds, exacerbating conflict and spreading terror in the region. The U.S. remains unwavering in its commitment to expose elements of the Iranian military and its complicit partners abroad in order to disrupt this critical source of funds.

The White House has stated that it has not yet found evidence linking Iran, the primary financial and military sponsor of Hamas, to the recent multipronged operation against Israel on October 7. However, in response to numerous rocket and drone attacks launched by militant groups against U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria since October 7, the U.S. has carried out strikes on Iranian-affiliated weapons depots in Syria in a retaliatory manner.
