US Military Launches New Interviews to Address Criticism and Seek Answers on Deadly Kabul airport bombing of 2021

The United States military has announced that it will conduct additional interviews with service members regarding the deadly suicide bombing near Kabul's airport in August 2021. The bombing took place during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and resulted in the deaths of 170 Afghans and 13 US service members.

The interviews aim to gather new information and ensure that all relevant voices are heard. The decision to conduct the interviews comes after criticism of the military's response to the bombing and concerns that it could have been prevented.

Former service members have raised questions about the lack of interviews conducted during the original investigation and have expressed their belief that the attack was preventable. The military's response, including a subsequent drone strike that killed innocent civilians, has also faced scrutiny.

A previous investigation by US Central Command concluded that the attack was not preventable without jeopardizing the mission to evacuate as many people as possible. However, a former Marine Sergeant testified before Congress that the military had been informed about a potential attack but did not receive a response.

The new interviews will seek to gather additional information from service members who were not previously interviewed. Many Afghans who assisted the US military are still in limbo, with limited options for escape. The system for processing Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans has faced severe backlogs, and there are concerns about the safety of those who worked with the US under Taliban rule.

The interviews will be conducted as part of an internal review ordered by General Erik Kurilla, head of US Central Command. While the interviews do not constitute a formal reopening of the investigation, they demonstrate the military's commitment to examining new information and ensuring transparency.

Family members of the service members killed in the bombing are being informed about the interviews, and updates on the process will be provided in the coming months.
