The ongoing violence in Manipur has been described as an internal matter of India by Eric Garcetti, America's top diplomat in New Delhi. Garcetti, who is currently in Washington for consultations with US Government officials, expressed his sympathy for the Indian people affected by the tragic incidents, stating that "our hearts break whenever there's human suffering." His comments were made in response to a question about a graphic video showing two disrobed women being brutalized by a mob in Manipur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the incident, pledging that the guilty will be brought to justice with the full force of the law.

The shocking video surfaced after an internet ban was lifted, sparking nationwide outrage over the violence that erupted in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on May 3. Since then, more than 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured in the ethnic violence, which was sparked by protests against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Although emphasizing that this is an internal matter for India, Garcetti emphasized that the US stands in solidarity with fellow human beings, sympathizing with the pain and suffering caused by these tragic events in Manipur. He stated, "Our hearts continue to go out to Indian people. As I've said, this is an Indian matter and an internal matter, but of course, we are always here as fellow human beings sympathizing with that sort of pain and that sort of suffering."

The horrific incident captured in the 26-second video took place a day after ethnic violence erupted in India's northeastern state but only surfaced on Wednesday, becoming viral after the internet ban was lifted. The incident occurred in a village in the Kangpokpi district and has sparked widespread outrage.

The violence began with a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The tragic events have had a devastating impact, with more than 160 lives lost and numerous injuries.
