The United States has approved a sale of M1A2 Abrams tanks and related equipment to Romania, a NATO ally that borders conflict-ridden Ukraine. The $2.53 billion deal aims to improve the security and capability of Romania, which is seen as an important force for political and economic stability in Europe. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that this proposed sale aligns with the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States. It will enhance Romania's ability to handle current and future threats by providing a credible force that can deter adversaries and participate in NATO operations.

Romania shares a border with Ukraine, where a full-scale Russian invasion has been taking place since February 2022. In response, the United States has been scaling up military aid and sales to Ukraine and its NATO allies. As part of this effort, Washington has pledged to provide Kyiv with 31 older versions of the Abrams tank, and some have already been delivered. The State Department has given its approval for the sale to Romania, and the DSCA has notified Congress, which needs to authorize the transaction.

The Romanian government is increasing its defense procurement efforts following Russia's attack on Ukraine, with plans to acquire new armored vehicles, missile systems, warships, 155mm howitzers, and the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet. If completed, Romania will become the second operator of the Abrams tank in Europe after Poland, which signed a $5 billion deal for 250 tanks in 2022 and placed a second order in January 2023 for an additional 116 tanks worth $1.4 billion. By providing Romania with advanced military equipment, the United States aims to bolster the security and stability of Europe and strengthen its alliances in the face of a volatile geopolitical environment.
