In a groundbreaking display of technological advancement and military capabilities, an unmanned US Navy vessel successfully fired lethal munitions in international waters in the Middle East. This exercise, known as Digital Talon, marked the first time that such an operation has taken place in this region. Led by the Navy's Task Force 59, which specializes in unmanned technology and artificial intelligence, the mission utilized manned-unmanned teaming to locate and destroy simulated enemy forces.

On October 23, the team launched live munitions from an unmanned vessel, effectively destroying a target boat. The firing, overseen by a human operator ashore, demonstrated the successful integration of unmanned platforms with manned ships. The Navy released a video capturing the moment when the missile struck the target, showcasing the precision and effectiveness of these unmanned systems. Vice Adm. Brad Cooper expressed enthusiasm for the operational application of these cutting-edge technologies, emphasizing their ability to enhance fleet lethality and strengthen regional maritime security.

The success of the Digital Talon exercise follows a previous demonstration in which unmanned aquatic and aerial vehicles tracked Iranian Navy and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This recent achievement serves as a testament to the Navy's commitment to advancing its unmanned capabilities. As part of their long-term vision, the Navy plans to create a hybrid fleet consisting of both crewed and uncrewed vessels.

The Congressional Budget Office's report outlined the Navy's proposed shipbuilding plan, which includes the procurement of large unmanned surface vessels (LUSVs) that would operate alongside manned surface ships. The Navy anticipates incorporating an expanding arsenal of combat-capable unmanned systems in future exercises. By harnessing the power of unmanned technology and artificial intelligence, the US Navy is revolutionizing maritime operations and bolstering its deterrence against potential threats. With continued advancements in unmanned platforms, the Navy is well-positioned to strengthen its fleet and maintain maritime superiority in the Middle East and beyond.
