UN Secretary-General: Peaceful World and Ukraine Resolution Unlikely, Urges G-20 Action
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expresses concerns about faltering efforts to build a peaceful world and unlikely resolution to the Ukraine conflict, highlighting the need for change in global institutions and urging G-20 leaders to address the climate crisis.
Efforts to build a peaceful world are faltering and a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine is unlikely in the immediate future, according to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Speaking ahead of the G-20 summit, Guterres expressed concerns about the increasing divisions, tensions, and eroding trust in the world.
He called for change in global multilateral institutions and highlighted the outdated and unfair global financial architecture. Guterres praised India for prioritizing the development agenda and representing the interests of the Global South in the G-20 summit. Regarding the Ukraine conflict, he acknowledged that both Ukraine and Russia have decided to continue with the conflict, making a peaceful solution unlikely.
Guterres emphasized the need for effective international institutions rooted in 21st-century realities and based on the UN Charter and international law. He urged G-20 leaders to show leadership in addressing the climate crisis, a pressing issue of our times.
While acknowledging the efforts of those working towards a peaceful resolution, Guterres emphasized the responsibility of member states in addressing conflicts and not making the UN a scapegoat for their actions.
