The United Nations has released a report highlighting the detrimental impact of incarceration on the health of Afghan women in prisons, according to Khaama Press. Representatives from the Office of Drug Control and Crime Prevention and the Women's Division of the United Nations have emphasized the need to address the negative consequences of imprisonment for women in the country. They have also underscored the importance of providing support both during and after confinement. In a joint statement, the United Nations Women's Agency and the Office of Drug Control and Crime Prevention expressed their concern and commitment to improving the circumstances of women in Afghan jails.

Discussions between the United Nations Special Representative for Women and the Representative of the Office of Drug Control and Crime Prevention in Kabul led to the release of the report. It revealed that the majority of incarcerated women in Afghanistan express concerns about their children's future and the impact on their families. As a result, they seek opportunities to learn new skills in order to support themselves and their families. The report also highlighted feelings of insecurity within prisons and worsening mental and physical health conditions for incarcerated women.

Social ostracization due to their status as prisoners and the long-term effects on their children were identified as additional challenges faced by these women. To address these issues, the joint statement aims to provide jailed women and those transitioning from drug treatment programs with protection, vital healthcare treatments, and reintegration assistance. The United Nations Special Representative for Women emphasized the organization's objective of ensuring that incarcerated women receive support throughout their confinement and after their release.

This support is essential to encourage their engagement in society. The report comes at a time when Afghanistan's women face numerous challenges, including the Taliban's restrictions on education, employment, and public spaces for girls and women. The joint efforts of the United Nations and relevant agencies aim to improve the conditions and prospects for Afghan women in prisons and promote their rights and well-being.
