The United Nations has strongly condemned the recent strikes on Gaza's largest refugee camp, which resulted in scores of casualties. Israel claims that the attacks targeted a Hamas commander, but the UN has raised concerns over the escalating violence and its devastating impact on the civilian population. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his appallment at the situation and called for an immediate halt to the violence. UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths highlighted the dire humanitarian consequences faced by the people of Gaza, emphasizing the need for urgent action.

He criticized the international community for its apparent lack of response and called for a "step change" in addressing the ongoing crisis. Israel stated that their airstrikes hit a vast tunnel complex, killing numerous Hamas terrorists, including local battalion commander Ibrahim Biari. However, Hamas claimed that seven hostages, including three foreign passport holders, were also killed in the bombings. Due to the constraints on verifying such claims, the true extent of the casualties is difficult to ascertain. The UN reiterated the importance of all parties abiding by international humanitarian law and urged them to exercise proportionality and precaution in their military operations. The Secretary-General called for an end to the shocking violence and suffering experienced by the people of Gaza.

In addition to the UN's condemnation, Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency responsible for assisting Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), managed to enter Gaza through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. This marks the highest-ranking UN official to access the region since the conflict began. Lazzarini reported that fuel is urgently needed in Gaza, and emphasized the pressing need for a strengthened humanitarian response. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The international community is being called upon to take immediate action in order to protect the lives and well-being of the people of Gaza.
