Ukraines Allies Stand United as International Court of Justice Takes On Russias Manipulation in Invasion Case

Ukraine's international allies have come forward to support Kyiv in its case against Russia, which accuses Moscow of manipulating the genocide convention to justify its invasion of Ukraine last year. This comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting Russia's use of various tactics, from manipulating food and energy supplies to abducting children, in its war against Ukraine.

The International Court of Justice is currently holding hearings to address Russia's claim that the court lacks jurisdiction and should dismiss Ukraine's case. Kyiv filed the case two days after Russia's invasion, arguing that the attack was based on false claims of genocide in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Ukraine firmly asserts that the court does indeed have jurisdiction, and its allies have expressed support for this position.

Canada's representative emphasized the severe consequences of Russia's illegal invasion and reiterated the importance of upholding the rules-based international order and the peaceful resolution of disputes. The panel of international judges at the court will likely take several weeks or even months to decide on whether the case can proceed, and if it does, a final ruling may still be years away.
