Ukraine extends invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend peace summit amid ongoing conflict with Russia Amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, Ukraine has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to participate in a planned peace summit of world leaders in Switzerland. The invitation comes as Russia's invasion of Ukraine approaches its second anniversary. China, which has close ties with Russia, refrained from criticizing its invasion of Ukraine but has also stated that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and has offered to help mediate in the conflict.
Ihor Zhovkva, a top diplomatic adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, highlighted the importance of China's participation in the summit, stating, "China's participation will be very important to us. We are working with the Chinese side. We involve our partners in the world so that they convey to the Chinese side how important it is to participate in such a summit." The summit, which has been organized at Zelenskiy's request, aims to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and promote peace. Ukraine is scrambling to maintain international support amid signs of war weariness among its Western allies after the failure of Kyiv's counteroffensive last year to bring a breakthrough on the battlefield.
The peace summit is expected to focus on Ukraine's 10-point peace plan, which includes the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity, withdrawal of all Russian troops, protection of food and energy supplies, nuclear safety, and the release of all prisoners of war. Neutral Switzerland has agreed to host the summit, but no date or venue has been set yet. Zhovkva shared that national security advisers from a record 82 countries had taken part in talks this month in the Swiss town of Davos that focused on Ukraine's peace plan. China's participation in the summit is anticipated to play a crucial role in addressing the conflict and promoting peace in Ukraine. The involvement of various countries, including those from the Global South, is hoped to maintain at the summit in Switzerland, as efforts continue to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
