Ukraine Braces for Winter Assault: President Warns of Russian Attacks on Infrastructure
Ukraine's President Zelenskyy warns of potential Russian attacks on infrastructure and calls for international support. Recent attacks have eased but are expected to intensify. Ukraine prepares for potential future attacks.
As winter approached, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a warning to the Ukrainian people about the potential for new waves of Russian attacks on infrastructure. He expressed concern that the enemy may increase the number of drone or missile strikes on Ukraine's infrastructure. Zelenskyy stressed the importance of defense and called on the international community to support Ukraine in its efforts to protect its people and increase its capabilities.
In recent days, Russian attacks on the eastern town of Avdiivka had eased, but military spokesman Oleksandr Shtupun warned that they were likely to intensify in the coming days. Ukrainian military intelligence reported an explosion in the Russian-occupied southern town of Melitopol, which resulted in the deaths of at least three Russian servicemen. They described it as an act of revenge by resistance groups. Last winter, Russia made waves of attacks on power stations and other plants linked to Ukraine's energy network, causing rolling blackouts in various regions.
While Energy Minister German Galushchenko assured that Ukraine would have enough energy resources to get through the winter, the concern was how much future attacks could affect supplies. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia had already struck Ukrainian infrastructure 60 times in recent weeks, suggesting that a campaign of attacks may already be underway. Despite the challenges, Zelenskyy praised the heroic efforts of troops defending Avdiivka and acknowledged the losses the enemy had suffered. He also highlighted the fact that Ukrainian defenses had been strengthened, but further improvements were needed to fully protect the entire territory.
Ukraine has received significant air defense systems, such as the US-made Patriot, from the West. However, Zelenskyy emphasized that there was still work to be done to enhance the air shield. In an effort to garner international support, Zelenskyy called on the international community to echo his appeal for assistance. This message was published shortly after presidential aide Andriy Yermak announced his arrival in the United States as part of a delegation to discuss support, including strengthening Ukraine's defense.
As tensions continue to rise between Ukraine and Russia, the Ukrainian government is taking proactive measures to prepare for potential attacks while seeking support from the international community. The resilience of the Ukrainian people and the dedication of their troops in defending their homeland against Russian aggression are crucial in navigating the challenges ahead.
