UK Security Minister, Tom Tugendhat, has announced a new funding of £95,000 to tackle pro-Khalistan extremism during his visit to Delhi. This investment aims to enhance the UK's capability to identify and disrupt extremist narratives and activity related to pro-Khalistan extremism.

The funding will also improve the UK government's understanding of the threat posed by this extremism, strengthening the cooperation between India and the UK on security issues.

Tugendhat made the announcement during a meeting with India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar. The funding comes at a crucial time as the UK and India are in the final stages of negotiating a bilateral Free Trade Agreement.

The aim is to ensure that all possible actions are taken against groups and individuals seeking to incite violent extremism or are involved in its financing. During his visit to India, Tugendhat also met national security adviser Ajit Doval before attending the G20 anti-corruption talks in Kolkata.

The discussions focused on joint challenges posed by child sex abuse and fraud. The British High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis, emphasized the importance of countering pro-Khalistan extremism and working together to address migration challenges.

He stated that the unique connection between the two nations brings both enormous opportunities and security challenges, and joint action is needed to keep both populations safe. The UK government remains committed to working with the government of India following the attack on the Indian High Commission in London in March 2023, the British High Commission in New Delhi added.

The announcement of this funding reflects a deeper partnership between the UK and India in effectively tackling security threats. Tugendhat expressed his commitment to enhancing understanding and capabilities against extremism in all its forms.

This partnership aims to make the world a safer and more prosperous place. Overall, the allocation of funding to tackle pro-Khalistan extremism demonstrates the UK's commitment to working closely with India and addressing shared security concerns. The investment will strengthen cooperation between the two nations and enhance their capability to identify and disrupt extremist activities.
