Turkish security forces have conducted a joint operation in the city of Izmir, resulting in the detention of 10 suspects believed to be linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group. The operation involved Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, police, and counter-terrorism squads, who acted on intelligence indicating that the suspects had hidden supplies within the city. Explosive gels, materials used in the production of explosives, weapons, and ammunition were discovered in the mountainous region of Izmir's Bornova district.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that five of the detained suspects have been arrested, while judicial control rulings have been imposed on the other five individuals. The suspects under judicial control rulings may be released from police detention but are subject to specific conditions and oversight. Footage shared by Yerlikaya depicted the operation, showing police vehicles in a mountainous area and officers searching a small cave for hidden materials. Authorities also carried out searches in a residence and apprehended the suspects. The authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified by Reuters.

Turkey has been a target of numerous attacks by IS, including the deadly assault on Istanbul's nightclub in 2017, claiming the lives of 39 people. The country's police have undertaken several operations to combat the militant group. In a separate but related operation, Turkish police have detained at least 17 people in a massive crackdown against the IS financing network. The operation, centered in the northwestern province of Tekirdag, covers nine provinces altogether. The state-run TRT broadcaster reported that one of the detained suspects is believed to be the treasurer of the IS. Since 2015, Turkey has experienced a series of attacks by the IS, prompting the country's counter-terrorism forces to intensify their efforts in combating the extremist organization.
