Tropical Storm Lee Set to Become Dangerous Category 3 Hurricane: Leeward Islands and US Coast Brace for Impact
Tropical Storm Lee set to become an extremely dangerous hurricane this weekend, potentially impacting the Leeward Islands and other regions, as the Atlantic basin experiences an above-average hurricane season.
Tropical Storm Lee is expected to rapidly intensify into an extremely dangerous hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean by this weekend, according to the US National Hurricane Centre. The storm, which could become a major category 3 or stronger hurricane by Friday, is projected to pass northeast of the Caribbean region, potentially impacting the Leeward Islands. While it is too early to determine the exact path and magnitude of the storm's impact, residents in the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Bahamas are advised to closely monitor the forecast.

The storm is currently located about 1,230 miles east of the Leeward Islands, moving at a speed of 16 mph. It is uncertain whether the storm will directly hit the US mainland, but even if it stays offshore, dangerous surf and rip currents could pose a threat to the East Coast. Last week, Hurricane Idalia caused widespread devastation in Haiti and parts of Florida, leaving 500,000 residents without power for days.
The formation of Tropical Storm Lee comes amid an above-average hurricane season, with the Atlantic basin experiencing an increased number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. Scientists attribute the rapid intensification of storms like Lee to warm ocean waters, low wind shear, and ample moisture in the atmosphere. As Lee continues to move west-northwest, it is expected to encounter favorable conditions for further strengthening.
