Tropical Storm Idalia, which recently formed near the Yucatan Channel, is now heading towards Florida, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm, which initially started as a tropical depression, has intensified and now has sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph). It is projected to potentially become a hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday. Observations from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft confirm the transformation of Tropical Depression Ten into Tropical Storm Idalia, as reported by the Miami-based weather forecaster.

The storm's current location is approximately 80 miles (130 km) east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has warned citizens to be prepared for the storm, stating that Idalia could reach Category 2 strength with sustained winds of 96 to 110 mph upon making landfall in Florida on Wednesday. The governor has declared a state of emergency for 33 counties and anticipates significant storm surge, high winds, and heavy rainfall, particularly in the Big Bend area where the panhandle transitions into the peninsula.

The potential impact of Idalia includes life-threatening storm surge and flooding, particularly along Florida's west coast and the Panhandle. Power outages are also expected, prompting preparations by power companies such as Duke Energy. The company is closely monitoring the storm's approach and readying crews and equipment to respond. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the forecasted path of Idalia and will be kept informed as the storm progresses, according to the White House.

In response to the impending threat, the National Guard has mobilized 1,100 members along with 2,400 high-water vehicles and a dozen aircraft to aid in rescue and recovery efforts. Citizens in the storm's path are advised to take necessary precautions and make necessary preparations as the potential impact of the storm becomes more imminent.
