Treasury Secretary Yellen to Visit Beijing for US-China Talks Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will visit Beijing this week from July 6-9 in the second high-level trip by a US official in a matter of weeks. The visit is part of an effort by the world’s two biggest economies to repair deteriorating relations. Yellen is expected to meet with senior Chinese officials and leading US firms and discuss the importance of responsibly managing the US-China relationship, communicating directly about areas of concern, and working together to address global challenges. Yellen’s visit follows the June trip by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, which marked the highest-ranking US official to visit Beijing in five years.

Blinken and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached an agreement to stabilise ties and ensure rivalry does not veer into conflict. Yellen will likely address China’s new national security and espionage law, as well as the potential implications for foreign and US firms, and the economic relationship. The US and China have had deteriorating relations due to various issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the crackdown on the Uighurs in Xinjiang, trade and supply chain issues, and the island of Taiwan. Yellen’s visit is an important step in helping spur global economic growth, tackling the mounting debt problem of the Global South, and showing China that 'decoupling' is not the ultimate goal of the US.
