The death toll from a tragic accident at an artisanal gold mine in southwest Mali has risen to over 70, including one woman, according to the President of Mali's Mines Chamber, Abdoulaye Pona. The incident occurred after a shaft collapsed at the site, located in the Kangaba Cercle in Mali's southwestern Koulikoro Region. The mines ministry initially reported over 40 deaths, but described this figure as provisional. The informal miners were reportedly digging at a site for which Toubani Resources has an exploration permit. Toubani Resources confirmed that the accident took place in an isolated area of its Kobada gold project concession, where no drilling had previously been conducted.

The company stated that its business operations remain unaffected by the incident. In the wake of this tragedy, the authorities have vowed to investigate the incident. Artisanal mining is a common activity in West Africa and has experienced a surge in recent years due to increased demand for metals and rising prices. However, deadly accidents are commonplace in artisanal mining due to the use of unregulated digging methods. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating event.
