Tragic Crash near Mount Everest Prompts Nepal to Implement Ban on Non-Essential Helicopter Flights

The Nepalese aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), has implemented a two-month ban on non-essential helicopter flights, including sight-seeing tours, following a tragic helicopter crash near Mount Everest.

The crash, which occurred on July 11, 2023, resulted in the death of six Mexican tourists and the pilot. The ban, in effect until September 2023, includes mountain flights, external load operations (sling flights), and the showering of flowers by helicopters.

This decision comes during Nepal's monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September. Nepal has a long history of air accidents due to its challenging terrain and remote locations.

Many airlines operate flights to small airports in the hills and near peaks, often obscured by clouds. The country's air transport sector has been plagued by accidents caused by poor maintenance, insufficient training, and lax safety standards.

The most recent crash involved a helicopter operated by Manang Air Service, and a committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Additionally, the CAAN has centralized the permission process for helicopter operations, including rescue flights, until September.

Nepal, known for its towering mountain peaks including Mount Everest, has seen numerous deadly accidents over the past three decades.

These include plane crashes near Pokhara International Airport and other remote areas, as well as crashes involving domestic and international flights.

In the deadliest aviation disaster in thirty years, 68 passengers out of 72 onboard a Yeti Airlines flight lost their lives. To address the ongoing safety concerns, the CAAN has established a team to provide daily control and supervision of helicopter and short takeoff and landing (STOL) operations.

The Nepalese government has also formed a four-member panel to investigate the recent crash, with a focus on determining the cause and preventing future tragedies. The ban on non-essential helicopter flights aims to improve aviation safety in Nepal and prevent further accidents.

The country will continue to work towards improving maintenance, training, and safety standards to protect both passengers and crew members.
