Two Greek air force pilots tragically lost their lives in a plane crash while battling forest fires on the island of Evia. The incident took place during a firefighting operation in Platanistos on Tuesday.

The water-bombing plane, a Canadair CL-215, crashed and subsequent search operations confirmed the deaths of the 34-year-old captain and 27-year-old co-pilot.

In response, the Greek Armed Forces announced a three-day mourning period for the loss of these brave individuals. The crash occurred amidst Greece's ongoing struggle with wildfires across multiple fronts, including popular tourist destinations like Rhodes and Corfu.

The fires have been exacerbated by a heatwave sweeping across the Mediterranean region, with temperatures in Algeria reaching a scorching 48 degrees Celsius. The situation has prompted Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to declare that Greece is at war with these devastating fires.

Mitsotakis also emphasized the urgent need to address the climate crisis, stating that the country is already experiencing the impacts of climate change. He acknowledged the challenges ahead and pledged to rebuild and compensate those affected by the fires.

Scientists from the World Weather Attribution group have also highlighted the role of human-caused climate change in intensifying heatwaves like the one Greece is currently facing. In addition to the Greek wildfires, other parts of the Mediterranean have also been grappling with extreme weather conditions.

Sicily, Italy, experienced wildfires and severe storms that caused damage and claimed two lives. Algeria struggled to control wildfires along its coast, resulting in the loss of at least 34 lives and the evacuation of over 1,500 people.

Tunisia also faced forest fires as temperatures soared to 49 degrees Celsius. The series of wildfire incidents across the Mediterranean highlights the urgent need for action to combat climate change and better prepare for the increasing risks associated with extreme weather events.

As Greece mourns the loss of its air force pilots, the nation stands united in its determination to rebuild and protect its people and environment from further harm.
