Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced the exciting lineup for its 2023 edition, featuring acclaimed Indo-Canadian director Deepa Mehta's latest project, as well as two mainstream productions from India.

One of the highlights of the festival will be the documentary "I Am Sirat," a collaboration between Mehta and the film's subject, Sirat Taneja. "I Am Sirat" follows the life of Sirat, a transgender woman who must navigate between her dual identities as a son when at home in New Delhi and her true self with her friends and at work with the Government of India.

Shot entirely on smartphones, the film explores the complexities of Sirat's life, caught between societal expectations and her own self-determination. Mehta, a Toronto-based director, is no stranger to TIFF, having previously premiered her adaptation of Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children" in 2012.

She has also earned the distinction of having her films entered as official entries for India and Canada in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. Another highly anticipated film at TIFF 2023 is "Thank You For Coming," directed by Karan Boolani.

The film, making its world premiere in the high-profile Gala section, follows the story of Kanika Kapoor, a single woman in her thirties on a quest for true love and pleasure. The production company behind the film, Balaji Telefilms Ltd, expressed their excitement about presenting the film at TIFF, stating that it holds a special place in their hearts.

TIFF has also re-branded its Contemporary World Cinema program as Centrepiece, and as part of the inaugural slate, Indian director Kiran Rao's "Lost Ladies" will be showcased. Set in rural India in 2001, the film revolves around two young brides caught up in a comedic series of mistaken identities.

TIFF's chief programming officer, Anita Lee, expressed her excitement about the new Centrepiece program, calling it a cinematic journey that transcends boundaries and embraces the art of human experience. The Toronto International Film Festival will take place from September 7-17, showcasing a diverse and exciting range of films from around the world. With these highly anticipated Indian productions and the inclusion of Deepa Mehta's work, TIFF 2023 is set to be a must-attend event for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
