Threads Breaks Record for Fastest Platform Sign-Ups

Meta Platforms' new social media app Threads has achieved an unprecedented milestone within five days of its launch – surpassing 100 million sign-ups. This puts it ahead of ChatGPT, which took two months to reach the same number of users in January this year.

The app has become increasingly popular since its launch, with celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian joining the platform. It is seen as a serious contender to Twitter, and its recent success has not gone unnoticed by the microblogging giant.

Twitter has threatened to sue Meta Platforms, claiming that the company has used its trade secrets and confidential information. However, legal experts believe such a claim may be hard to prove.

Threads allows users to post content up to 500 characters long, and includes links, photos and videos of up to 5 minutes. Despite its success, the app still lags behind Twitter, which had nearly 240 million monetisable daily active users as of July last year.

Additionally, Threads does not yet have a direct messaging function or a desktop version, which may be a disadvantage to certain users. Nevertheless, analysts believe that the recent turbulence at Twitter, such as the imposed limits on the number of tweets users can see, could help Threads to attract more users and advertisers.

Currently, there are no ads on the app, and Mark Zuckerberg has said that the company will only consider monetisation once it reaches 1 billion users.
