Many of these soldiers come from indigenous peoples in regions such as Siberia, which have been heavily impacted by Russia's war efforts. This mobilization is seen by civil society groups as a political choice by the Kremlin, as regions like Buryatia are considered to pose less of a risk of anti-government protests. However, not all of the recruits in the Sibir battalion hail from Siberia.

Some come from other parts of Russia but share the same desire to fight for Ukraine against Russia and express solidarity with the Siberian peoples. One soldier, who goes by the name Gandhi, cited his refusal to be complicit in the crimes committed by his own country and expressed horror at the mass violence being perpetrated on the Ukrainian people. As Gandhi aims to break Russia's "prison of nations," he believes that his contribution to the Sibir battalion will ultimately lead to the collapse of the empire.

President Putin has consistently denied targeting civilians in the invasion of Ukraine, asserting that he is defending Russia's territorial integrity by any means necessary. However, the formation of a battalion within the Ukrainian army consisting entirely of Russian citizens sheds light on the growing discontent among certain segments of Russian society and their willingness to fight against their own government's actions.
