Talibans Call for Sharia Law Sends Shockwaves Through Afghanistan: Violent Punishments & Human Rights Decline

The Taliban has emphasized the importance of implementing Sharia law in Afghanistan, according to reports from Tolo News. Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban-appointed Acting Interior Minister, spoke to a gathering of religious clerics, tribal elders, and local officials in Laghman, stating that the current jihad in Afghanistan is aimed at implementing Sharia law. This comes as the Taliban seeks to fully impose their interpretation of Sharia, including practices such as public executions, amputations, and floggings, which experts believe will result in a further decline of human rights in the impoverished nation.

It is worth noting that when the Taliban previously held power from 1996 to 2001, they enforced a harsh interpretation of Sharia law, which involved violent punishments like public executions, stoning, floggings, and amputations. In an attempt to gain international support, the Taliban initially projected a more moderate image after seizing power in August 2021. However, in the months since, they have tightened their grip on rights and freedoms in the country. The impact on women's rights in Afghanistan has been particularly severe. Women can no longer work in most sectors and are required to have a male guardian for long-distance travel.

Additionally, girls have been prohibited from returning to secondary school. These restrictions have resulted in a deterioration of gender equality and female empowerment. The security situation in Afghanistan has also worsened since the Taliban took over, leading to increased isolation and poverty within the nation. Concerns have been raised about recent activities by neighboring countries, such as Pakistan and Iran, which have further contributed to security challenges.

Political analyst Zalmai Afghanyar emphasized the importance of the ministers of the interior and defense in ensuring the security and borders of Afghanistan. He stated that motivating the Islamic Emirate's forces at the borders and addressing the security concerns caused by neighboring countries were key purposes of their visit. The Taliban's push for Sharia law and their repressive policies have raised alarm among experts and human rights advocates. The international community continues to closely monitor the situation in Afghanistan, recognizing the urgent need to protect human rights and ensure the well-being of the Afghan people.
