In the lead-up to Taiwan's upcoming election, the main political parties have taken a strong stance against China's influence and crackdown in Hong Kong, rejecting the one country, two systems model being pushed by Beijing. The opposition Kuomintang party's vice presidential candidate, Jaw Shaw-kong, urged Beijing to treat Hong Kong well, specifically referencing the ongoing national security trial of China critic Jimmy Lai. Lai faces a charge of colluding with foreign forces, a trial that has drawn international attention and criticism.

Jaw emphasized that the people of Taiwan are closely watching how Beijing treats Hong Kong and will not accept the 'one country, two systems' framework. Meanwhile, Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate, Lai Ching-te, has also been critical of Hong Kong's lack of freedoms under Chinese rule, warning that the same fate could befall Taiwan if Beijing has its way.

President Tsai Ing-wen has similarly urged the people to consider what happened to Hong Kong when they vote. The Taiwanese political parties' firm rejection of Beijing's model of governance in Hong Kong highlights the continued concern over China's encroachment on democratic rights and freedoms. The upcoming election will serve as a crucial battleground for the future of Taiwan's sovereignty and democratic principles in the face of growing Chinese influence.
