Suspended Nigerian central bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, made his first public appearance in over a month as he appeared in court on Tuesday to deny charges of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.

Emefiele, who was detained on June 10 by a state security agency following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The governor has challenged his detention and filed an application for bail.

Emefiele, known for using unorthodox policies to strengthen the country's currency and boost growth, was one of the most powerful men in Nigeria until his arrest. Tinubu, who criticized the central bank's policies, is embarking on significant reforms. The trial could potentially impact the Central Bank of Nigeria at a time when the country is seeking to attract more foreign investors.
