Norwegian left-wing party leader Bjørnar Moxnes has resigned from his position after being caught on camera stealing a pair of luxury sunglasses from a duty-free shop in Oslo.

The incident, which occurred on June 16, was captured on CCTV footage showing Moxnes trying on the sunglasses, asking for his girlfriend's opinion, and then putting them in his pocket without paying. The video went viral on social media, leading to Moxnes calling in sick in July.

On June 30, he was charged by the police with theft and fined 3,000 kroner for stealing sunglasses worth 1,199 kroner. On July 24, Moxnes admitted to the theft in a Facebook post and resigned as party leader. In his statement, he expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged that people in power should be held accountable.

Moxnes had been the leader of Norway's Red Party for 11 years and helped the party win seven seats in the country's parliament in the 2021 elections. Following his resignation, Marie Sneve Martinussen has been appointed as the new party leader.
