The Spanish government is taking swift action to evacuate more than 70 Spaniards from Niger following the military coup in the West African country. The Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that plans are underway to airlift the citizens to safety.

Concerns over security have prompted the Spanish government to withhold specific details about the evacuation operation, including whether Spain will deploy its own aircraft.

However, embassy staff in Niamey, the capital of Niger, have been in contact with Spanish residents and visitors to coordinate the mission. This decision comes after France made a similar announcement to evacuate its citizens, as well as nationals from other European Union countries.

Niger's closure of its airspace and the cancellation of all commercial flights have prompted Italy to also arrange a special flight for the repatriation of its citizens from Niamey.

With tensions high and uncertainty surrounding the situation, the Spanish government aims to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens in Niger. Alongside its European counterparts, Spain is taking proactive measures to provide support and assistance during this challenging time.
