Snowpocalypse in northern England: Motorists stranded, power outages, and chaos on the roads

Heavy snowfall in northern England has caused chaos on the roads, leaving motorists stranded in their cars and without power. More than 2,500 customers have been affected by power outages, while trucks jackknifing on highways have caused major disruptions to travel. Drivers have reported taking hours to complete short journeys, with some spending the night in their vehicles.

The Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service has been working throughout the night to assist drivers trapped in deep snow, while schools, churches, and a scout hut have been used as emergency shelters for stranded travelers. Emergency services have been facing challenges in response to the storm, and highways workers have reportedly been verbally abused by frustrated drivers.

The severe weather conditions have led to the cancellation of bus services, leaving many people without transport. Cumbria Police Superintendent Andy Wilkinson has urged people to avoid traveling to the county. Electricity North West is working to restore power to affected customers, and the Met Office has issued a weather warning for ice in several areas.
