Slovakias U-turn: Prime Minister Fico Halts €40.3 Million Military Aid Package to Ukraine

Slovakia's new government, led by Prime Minister Robert Fico, has refused to approve a military aid package for Ukraine worth €40.3 million ($43 million), according to local media reports. The package, prepared by the outgoing government, included various ammunition and missiles. This decision comes as part of Fico's promise to halt military aid to Ukraine, a position he campaigned on during the elections and shares with Hungary's leader Viktor Orban.

The rejection of this aid package and the cessation of military assistance marks a shift in Slovakia's stance towards the conflict in Ukraine. Prior to Fico's appointment, Slovakia had provided Ukraine with 13 military aid packages worth a total of €671 million ($716 million). It is worth noting, however, that the cancellation of official military aid is expected to have limited impact as army stocks have mostly been depleted.
