Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced his intention to nominate Mr Seah Kian Peng as the next Speaker of Parliament, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office. Mr Seah, 61, currently serves as Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC and previously held the position of Deputy Speaker from 2011 to 2016. The Speaker position became vacant following the resignation of Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, who stepped down amidst controversy surrounding an affair with former Tampines GRC MP Cheng Li Hui. The Speaker presides over parliamentary sittings and is responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations outlined in the Standing Orders of Parliament. The Speaker must remain impartial and fair to all Members of Parliament while regulating and enforcing the rules of debate. Apart from his political career, Mr Seah has also had a successful career outside of politics. He is currently the CEO of NTUC Enterprise, a group of companies that includes social enterprises like NTUC FairPrice and Kopitiam.

He has also held various positions on the boards of organizations such as the Singapore Olympic Foundation and Singtel. The nomination of Mr Seah as Speaker of Parliament is a significant development in Singapore's political landscape. The role of the Speaker is crucial for the smooth functioning of parliament and upholding democratic processes.
