x

The political landscape of Pakistan is experiencing a shift as former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari recently met in the United Arab Emirates to consult and decide on the timing of the next general elections in the country and their respective share in the future set-up. The two leaders, both part of the ruling coalition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), had a meeting in Dubai on Monday afternoon to hammer out a consensus on a number of key issues such as finalizing names for the caretaker set-up and deciding who will get what key position if the two partners win the next elections. The report, citing sources, suggested that the uncertainty surrounding the next general elections may soon come to an end with the detailed deliberations of the top leadership of the two main coalition partners in the federal government. The PDM was formed in September 2020, aiming to unseat the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. The coalition has held several rallies since its launch, with its top leaders speaking at each of them. The PDM’s agenda includes early elections, an end to the PTI government and the formation of a new set-up. However, the coalition has yet to decide on the dates for the elections, which the members believe should be held as soon as possible.

The PDM is a major force in the ruling coalition, with the PML-N and PPP—the two parties that Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari respectively lead—playing a crucial role. The two parties have been in talks regarding the elections, with their leaders meeting frequently to strategize on how to best conduct the elections and gain as much as possible from the process. Clearly, the Sharif-Zardari meeting is a move to ensure that both parties have a strong presence in the elections and are in a position to reap the benefits. It is certainly a significant step in the right direction for the PDM coalition as it continues to build momentum in its efforts to oust the current government. The Sharif-Zardari meeting is indicative of the fact that the PDM has a strong vision for the general elections and the political landscape of Pakistan. The coalition is certainly working towards a better future for the country, and the outcome of the meeting between the two leaders will be of great significance to the elections and the nation as a whole.
