After two decades at the luxury brand Alexander McQueen, fashion designer Sarah Burton is stepping down as creative director, announced luxury group Kering on Monday. Burton, who had led the fashion house since 2010, previously worked with its founder, Lee Alexander McQueen, for 14 years. She took over as creative director after McQueen tragically ended his own life at the age of 40. Kering confirmed that Burton's final show with the brand will be the spring and summer catwalk show in Paris this month. Burton gained international fame for designing the iconic ivory lace wedding gown worn by Kate Middleton when she married Prince William in 2011.

The elegant dress, which has since become one of the most popular styles for brides worldwide, has been widely copied. In recognition of her contributions to the fashion industry, Burton was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2012. Senior leaders at Kering have praised Burton for leaving an indelible mark with her vision and creativity. François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO of Kering, stated that Burton maintained the heritage, attention to detail, and unique vision of Lee Alexander McQueen while adding her own highly creative touch.

The fashion house has not announced who will replace Burton as creative director. Burton's departure from Alexander McQueen has sparked speculation that she may launch her own label. She has also become one of Princess Kate's favored designers, dressing her for significant occasions such as the weddings of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Kate has often chosen the British fashion house for her royal engagements and even family outings, including her stunning 40th birthday shoot last year.

During Burton's time as creative director, she successfully turned Alexander McQueen into a commercial success, with sales reaching €830 million in 2022, a significant increase from €220 million in 2014. In addition to Kate Middleton, the brand is popular among A-list celebrities like Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman, and Lady Gaga. Burton's departure follows other recent changes within the luxury fashion group Kering, including Alessandro Michele's exit from Gucci in November 2022.
