Two Russian missiles struck a residential area in the heart of Ukraine's second city Kharkiv on Tuesday, injuring 17 people, two of them seriously, and causing significant damage to homes, local officials said. Rescue teams were on the scene, sifting through rubble to determine if anyone else was hurt. Fires were extinguished in two buildings and damaged residential buildings are being assessed.

Kharkiv Regional Governor Oleh Synehubov wrote on the Telegram messaging app that the missiles had hit the city centre and caused light injuries to four people. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov also wrote on Telegram, stating that the missiles struck in an area with no military infrastructure, directly targeting residences. Despite being a frequent target of attacks, Kharkiv has managed to retain its independence over the nearly two-year-old conflict. However, this recent attack has brought the devastation closer to home for the residents.
