Russian Defense Ministry Foils Ukrainian Drone Attack on Crimea

In a series of recent events, Russia claims to have thwarted an attack by 20 Ukrainian drones targeting Crimea. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 14 drones were shot down by air defenses, while six were jammed electronically. No casualties or damage were reported.

These attacks followed three consecutive days of drone attacks on Moscow, which have little apparent military value for Ukraine but serve to unsettle Russians and remind them of the ongoing conflict. Drone attacks have been increasing in recent weeks, targeting both Moscow and Crimea.

The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 was considered illegal by most of the world. However, Kyiv officials have neither confirmed nor denied Ukraine's possible involvement in the attempted attacks. In another development, Russia claimed to have regained control of the village of Urozhaine in Ukraine's Luhansk region through an overnight counterattack.

Meanwhile, a 73-year-old woman was killed in the Russian shelling of Ukraine's Kharkiv region, and a police officer was killed with 12 others wounded when a Russian aerial bomb hit the city of Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region. In response to the drone attacks, Russia's Crimean Peninsula faced an attempted attack early Saturday morning with 20 Ukrainian drones.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that all the drones were destroyed with no casualties or damage. Fourteen drones were destroyed by air defense systems, while six were suppressed by electronic warfare. It remains unclear what the specific targets of these attacks were, but air defense systems were engaged in repelling the air attacks in different parts of the Crimea.

Traffic on the Crimean Bridge, linking the peninsula with the Russian region of Krasnodar, was suspended for approximately two hours. These drone attacks have been increasing since a drone was destroyed over the Kremlin in May, leading to further tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

However, Ukraine rarely claims responsibility for such operations publicly. In addition to the drone attacks, a missile launched by Russia resulted in the death of an eight-year-old boy in Western Ukraine. The missile struck a house in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, near the Polish border. These incidents have disrupted flights at Russian airports, with flights at Vnukovo airport and Kaluga airport being halted due to drone attacks.

The situation between Ukraine and Russia remains tense, with escalating drone attacks and military actions on both sides. These incidents further exacerbate the already strained relations between the two neighboring countries.
