Russia Launches Record 90 Drones in New Year's Assault on Ukraine, Prompting Destructive Aerial Strikes
Russia launches 90 Shahed-type drones over Ukraine, intensifies attacks on neighbor. Ukrainian civilian casualties reported, including a 15-year-old killed in Odesa, and damage to Lviv museum and university buildings.
Russia launched a record 90 Shahed-type drones across Ukraine during the early hours of the new year, and Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country would “intensify its attacks on its neighbor. The Ukrainian air force reported that a 15-year-old boy was killed and seven people were wounded after falling debris from one of the drones hit a building in the city of Odesa, sparking a number of small fires, including at the city’s port. In the western city of Lviv, Russian attacks severely damaged a museum dedicated to Roman Shukhevych, a controversial Ukrainian nationalist and military commander who fought for Ukrainian independence during World War II.

I feel sorry for the innocent. What was Ukraine trying to achieve exactly? pic.twitter.com/0uPYgUMjw0
University buildings in the town of Dubliany were also damaged, although no casualties were reported. The aerial strikes follow a series of heavy aerial bombardments that began when Russia unleashed an 18-hour attack that resulted in at least 49 people being killed. Shelling blamed on Ukraine in the center of the Russian border city of Belgorod Saturday killed 21 people, including three children. Both Ukraine and Russia have relied extensively on explosive droves during the war, and the wave of Russian attacks in Ukraine continued throughout the day Monday.
