Tensions remain high on the Lebanese-Israeli border as Israeli forces continue to shell the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Chouba. The incident occurred after a projectile was fired from the village and Israeli forces responded with two rocket attacks.
The U.N. peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, sent peacekeepers to investigate, and the head of the mission is speaking to both Lebanese and Israeli authorities to ease tensions.
It is unclear who fired the rocket from Lebanon, but the tensions have been exacerbated by the presence of two tents erected by Hezbollah and Israel’s building of a wall around the Lebanese part of the village. The Lebanese army did not comment on the explosions, but Hezbollah issued a statement about the wall.
The situation has also been heated along Chebaa Farms and around Kfar Chouba, where Israel captured the areas from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war and they are part of Syria’s Golan Heights that Israel annexed in 1981.
In early June, Israel filed a complaint with the U.N. saying that Hezbollah had set up tents several dozen meters (yards) inside the disputed territory. In addition, Israeli soldiers fired tear gas to disperse scores of Lebanese protesters who pelted the troops with stones along the border near the disputed territory. Hezbollah also shot down an Israeli drone last month. Both sides have continued to call for restraint and are hoping to de-escalate the situation.
