In a powerful speech at the Conservative Party conference, Rishi Sunak reassured the British public that the UK is not a racist country and highlighted his own journey as proof of this. As the country's first Indian-origin Prime Minister, Sunak emphasized that his skin color was not a "big deal." Sunak's speech came nearly a year after he took charge as the Tory leader, and it was deemed the most important of his political career. With a general election expected next year, the stakes were high for the 43-year-old leader as he addressed party activists.

His wife, Akshata Murty, warmly introduced him during the conference, praising his honesty, integrity, and strength of character. Sunak then outlined his plans to win the British public's mandate in the upcoming elections. Sunak proudly stated, "Never let anyone tell you that this is a racist country. It is not. My story is a British story - a story about how a family can go from arriving here with little to Downing Street in three generations." He also acknowledged his Cabinet colleagues of Indian heritage, such as Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho, as examples of the opportunities the Tory Party offers migrant families, including the chance to become Prime Minister.

Reflecting on his initial selection by the regional Conservative Association to contest from Richmond in North Yorkshire, Sunak shared that international observers couldn't comprehend it. He mentioned an American magazine that sent a reporter to Yorkshire to write about how a candidate of a different race could cost the Tories one of England's safest seats. However, Sunak emphasized that the people of North Yorkshire were more interested in his character than his color.

During the speech, Sunak focused on his vision for the UK's transformation and announced significant plans across various sectors. He canceled the remainder of the High Speed-2 (HS2) railway project, redirecting GBP 36 billion towards broader transport initiatives. Moreover, he unveiled plans to raise the smoking age progressively, aiming to create a smoke-free generation. Additionally, Sunak highlighted his plans to revolutionize the education system. He proposed introducing the new rigorous and knowledge-rich Advanced British Standard, which would consolidate A-Levels and T-Levels into a single qualification.

This move would prioritize parity of esteem between academic and technical education, ensuring that all students sit the Advanced British Standard. Furthermore, he pledged to improve literacy and numeracy skills by having all students study English and maths until the age of 18, with additional support for struggling students. Overall, Sunak's speech at the Conservative Party conference demonstrated his commitment to a long-term vision for the UK, encompassing various sectors such as transportation, public health, and education. He effectively showcased his personal journey as a testament to the inclusiveness and opportunities inherent in British society.
