Mark Kalaivanan Tamilarasan, a 44-year-old Indian-origin male, has been sentenced to 18 years of preventive detention and 12 strokes for sexually assaulting a maid in Singapore. This news comes as Tamilarasan had reportedly broken into a flat in July 2017 while intoxicated and attacked the maid who was ironing clothes. Preventive detention is a measure taken against recalcitrant offenders to protect the public from their actions.

Tamilarasan was convicted of four charges, including aggravated sexual assault, house trespass to commit sexual assault, outrage of modesty, and impersonation of a public servant. The sentencing hearing took place in February, during which Tamilarasan's uncle made an emotional appeal to implement a gag order on his nephew's identity. The court considered his plea but ultimately ruled for the preparation of an additional suitability report for preventive detention before delivering the final sentence. This is not Tamilarasan's first offense, as he had previously served a 16-year incarceration for a rape conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutors sought the harshest possible sentence of 20 years of preventive detention, deeming him fit for such a penalty. The case highlights the importance of protecting individuals from repeat offenders. The prosecution's recommendation and subsequent reports supported a sentence of 20 years of preventive detention for Tamilarasan.

Justice Pang Khang Chau, taking into consideration Tamilarasan's uncle's claim of remorse, ultimately sentenced him to 18 years of preventive detention and 12 strokes. The decision aims to safeguard the public and prevent further harm from recurring. The heinous nature of the crime and Tamilarasan's history of sexual offenses demonstrates the need for strict legal measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
