An Indian national, 40-year-old Sivalingam Suresh, has been sentenced to 10 months in jail in Singapore for reckless driving, causing the death of a 79-year-old woman. Suresh pleaded guilty to driving a lorry without due care and attention, hitting the woman as she crossed a zebra crossing in February. The victim, Bernadette Mah Sui Har, suffered a head injury and died the same day. Suresh, who has a history of errant driving, will be disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for eight years following his release.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Benedict Teong stated that Suresh failed to notice Bernadette as he approached the zebra crossing and had multiple prior driving offenses. For causing death by driving without due care and attention, Suresh could have faced up to three years in jail and a fine of up to 10,000 Singapore dollars. Instead, he will undergo a 10-month prison sentence and an eight-year driving ban. Suresh expressed remorse during a mitigation plea, noting that he is the sole earner for his family in India and heavily relies on his job as a driver in Singapore.
