Rescue efforts continue in western India as hundreds of responders work tirelessly to find survivors and recover bodies following a massive landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains. As of now, 27 dead bodies have been found, while 78 people remain missing in Irshalwadi village in the Raigadh district, located nearly 80km from Mumbai.

The village has been heavily impacted, with at least 17 out of 48 houses either fully or partially buried under debris. The challenging hilltop location and difficult terrain have made rescue operations more complex, requiring manual efforts using rods and shovels due to the inability to access heavy equipment in the area.

The rescue operation had to be suspended at times due to the threat of more landslides and rainfall. This devastating event in Maharashtra is part of a larger pattern of extreme weather across the region. Northern India has experienced record monsoon rains over the past few weeks, resulting in over 100 deaths, collapsed roads, and damaged homes. The monsoon season, which spans from June to September, is critical for rain-fed crops but often brings extensive damage, including severe flooding.

The state of Maharashtra remains on alert as incessant rains have caused disruptions, including water flowing inside train stations and over tracks. Despite the challenges faced by rescue teams, they continue to work tirelessly to locate survivors and provide assistance to affected communities.
