In a strong show of unity, the Quad grouping, consisting of India, Australia, Japan, and the US, issued a powerful joint statement expressing their serious concerns over China's aggressive behavior in the Indo-Pacific region. The ministers emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also highlighting the need to resolve disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law. They expressed alarm over the militarization of disputed features, the dangerous use of coast guard and maritime militia vessels, and attempts to disrupt other countries' offshore activities.

The Quad reaffirmed its commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the principles of freedom, the rule of law, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. The ministers called for the adherence to international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to address challenges to the global maritime rules-based order. They also stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and overflight in the region, as well as their strong opposition to any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo through force or coercion.

The Quad's concerns come as China continues to assert its territorial claims in the South and East China Seas, engaging in hotly contested disputes with neighboring countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. China has also made significant progress in militarizing its man-made islands. The South and East China Seas are not only rich in natural resources but are also crucial for global trade. While the US has no territorial claims in the region, it has been actively challenging China's growing assertiveness by deploying warships and fighter jets to assert freedom of navigation.

The Quad's joint statement also addressed other global issues. The ministers expressed deep concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine, calling for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter. They also highlighted their worries about global food security and supported the UN's efforts in the resumption of the Black Sea Grain Initiative (BSGI). Furthermore, they emphasized that the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons would be unacceptable and underscored the importance of a rules-based international order that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.

This strong message from the Quad highlights the growing concerns among global powers regarding China's behavior in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad leaders' reaffirmation of their commitment to uphold the principles and values of the UN Charter underscores their determination to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive, stable, and prosperous.
