Putin Sets Out Ambitious Plans as Russia Assumes 2024 BRICS Chairmanship
Russia, assuming 2024 BRICS chairmanship, plans to strengthen multilateralism for global development and security. Putin emphasizes growing authority, expanding membership, and multidimensional agenda.
As Russia assumes the 2024 BRICS chairmanship, President Vladimir Putin has outlined the country's plans to strengthen multilateralism for equitable global development and security. Following the decision adopted by the 15th BRICS Summit, which expanded the association to include 10 countries, Putin emphasized the growing authority of the group and its role in international affairs. The expanding authority of BRICS is attracting an increasing number of supporters and like-minded countries that share its underlying principles, including sovereign equality, mutual respect for development paths, and the pursuit of collective solutions to global challenges.
In addition to the current member countries, Russia is also working on the modalities of a new category of BRICS partner countries, with plans to attract around 30 potential new members to join the multidimensional agenda. The focus of Russia's chairmanship will be to promote cooperation in politics and security, economy and finance, as well as cultural and humanitarian contacts among member countries.
Furthermore, Russia's priorities include promoting cooperation in science, high technology, healthcare, environmental protection, culture, sports, youth exchanges, and civil society. Over 200 events of different levels and types will be held in various Russian cities as part of the BRICS chairmanship, culminating in the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October. Putin expressed hopes for productive collaboration with all countries in the BRICS orbit as Russia takes on its new role.
