The appellate election tribunal in Pakistan has declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi ineligible to contest elections from his stronghold in Multan after rejecting his appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers. Qureshi was cleared to contest polls from the NA-214 constituency in Sindh's Umarkot city, but his nomination papers for Multan were rejected, ultimately leading to his ineligibility. The election tribunal had also rejected Qureshi's appeal to restore his right to candidacy, solidifying his disqualification from the upcoming general elections.

The decision came after over 60 appeals were heard in the election tribunal, with a mix of acceptance and rejection of other contenders' nomination papers. This follows Pakistan police implicating Qureshi in at least 12 cases registered in connection with violence following his rearrest, leading to his remand in Adiala Jail on a two-week remand for a case related to an attack on the General Headquarters. The PTI leader had filed appeals against the rejection of his nomination papers for several constituencies, which were ultimately dismissed by the tribunal.

Meanwhile, an appeal filed against the approval of nomination papers of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif from NA-130 was also heard by an appellate tribunal in Lahore. However, the situation is not unique to Qureshi, as the tribunal also rejected an appeal against the approval of PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz's nomination papers from PP-80 Sargodha, indicating broader challenges within the political climate leading up to the elections.
