Prime Minister of Nepal Faces Pressure Over Allegations of Indian Interference

Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, is facing pressure from the opposition parties in Parliament due to his remarks about an Indian businessman settling in Nepal. This businessman was reportedly instrumental in Prachanda's appointment to the Prime Minister's position, an allegation which Prachanda denies.

Both Houses of the Nepalese Parliament – Rashtriya Sabha and the House of Representatives – were adjourned for the day after the opposition parties made their accusations that the Prime Minister's remarks had lowered the dignity of the country. Members of the main opposition Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and the Rashtriya Swatantra Party were on their feet in the House of Representatives, while the pro-monarchy Rahstriya Prajatantra members made their way to the well of the House, shouting slogans that “a Prime Minister appointed by New Delhi does not have the right to remain in the post”.

The Prime Minister, however, continues to deny the allegations of Indian interference and stated that he never asked the Indian businessman for help to become Prime Minister. The government has also labelled the accusations as a political conspiracy to defame the Prime Minister, and they have asked for the opposition to provide proof to back their claims. Prachanda is under immense pressure, with both Houses of Parliament having been adjourned for the day and the opposition refusing to back down on their accusations.

Despite his denial of the allegations, the Prime Minister has been unable to prove his innocence of alleged involvement of the Indian businessman in his appointment as Prime Minister of Nepal. With the situation as it is, it is uncertain whether the Prime Minister's position will remain secure. The allegations have already created a stir in the country and the opposition is standing firm in its call for Prachanda's resignation. Only time will tell if the Prime Minister will be able to prove his innocence and whether he will be able to weather this political storm.
