Polish Government Cleans House at State Media, Promises Fair Reporting Amid Controversy

The management of Polish public television, radio and news agency PAP have been dismissed, the culture ministry said on Wednesday, as one public news channel that critics said had become politicized under the previous government went off air. The state-run media, particularly TVP Info, was seen as an outlet for propaganda during the previous government's time in office. Prime Minister Donald Tusk's coalition aims to create new stations that promise a more balanced approach to reporting. TVP Info was taken off the air and replaced with a public television channel.

The new government's decision to take public media off the air and dismiss executives is motivated by a desire to restore impartiality and credibility. The move is marked as a significant turnaround in the face of criticism from the former ruling party. The resolution adopted by the new parliament calls for the restoration of constitutional order in terms of citizens' access to reliable information and the functioning of public media, which led to the dismissals at TVP, radio, and news agency PAP. The protests outside TVP offices and statements made by former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on social media labeled the management dismissals as illegal and a violation of the rule of law.

The new government's decision was also met with sharp criticism from the former ruling party, leading to police intervention to maintain order at the state broadcaster TVP headquarters and other state media offices. The issue has inflamed tensions between the two political parties. In response to the dismissals, President Andrzej Duda called for the government to obey the law, emphasizing that a political goal cannot evade violating constitutional principles.

Additionally, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has called for the government to adopt a comprehensive bill on the independence of public media and to incorporate public debate and civil society in the reform process. The government's decision has sparked debates over media freedom and political freedom, and promises to create new stations committed to balanced reporting. The conflict over public media has become a heated and divisive issue, setting the tone for the politics of the new government.
