Poland Clarifies Arms Deliveries Amidst Grain Dispute: Is Alliance with Ukraine at Risk?

Poland's government has clarified that it is only carrying out previously agreed arms deliveries to Ukraine, amid tensions caused by a grain dispute. The decision to extend a ban on Ukrainian grain imports has infuriated Kyiv, as Poland had been viewed as one of Ukraine's strongest allies in its conflict with Russia. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that Poland is no longer supplying weapons to Ukraine and is instead focusing on rebuilding its own weapon stocks.

However, a government spokesman stated that Poland is fulfilling previously signed contracts with Ukraine. Poland has provided T-72 and Leopard tanks, armoured vehicles, and howitzers to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

While some experts argue that Poland may not have further weapons to provide, others believe that Morawiecki's comments were politically motivated and aimed at gaining favor with anti-Ukrainian voters ahead of the parliamentary election. Despite the current tensions, a US official emphasized that there will be no change in Poland's support for Ukraine. The Ukrainian ambassador to Poland also expressed confidence in the resolution of the grain dispute through negotiations.
