Paramilitary Forces Turn Wad Madani into Battleground, Forcing Mass Exodus
x

Paramilitary forces have established a base in the city of Wad Madani in Sudan, leading to a mass exodus of residents already displaced by the ongoing conflict. The war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has reached Wad Madani, turning the former sanctuary city into a battleground. Thousands have sought to escape the city since the conflict escalated, but have faced prohibitive costs and logistical challenges. Wad Madani, which was previously considered one of Sudan's few remaining safe havens, has now become a site of urban warfare with fighter jets flying overhead and the sound of explosions echoing across the city.

The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the situation, with American ambassador John Godfrey urging the RSF to cease their advance and refrain from attacking the state capital. The conflict has already had a devastating impact on the city, which is home to over 86,000 displaced people. More than 270,000 residents were dependent on humanitarian aid, and the UN has suspended all humanitarian field missions in the region. The war between the army chief and RSF commander has taken a toll on Sudan's infrastructure, economy, and healthcare system, causing the deaths of thousands and displacing millions.

Families are once again fleeing for safety, but facing increased costs and limited options for refuge. The situation in Wad Madani has become catastrophic, with pharmacies shutting down and widespread reports of indiscriminate firing on residential areas and targeting of civilians, activists, and healthcare personnel. The ongoing conflict has left vulnerable families with nowhere to hide from violence, no means of escape, and no safe place to seek refuge.

The city's doctors' union has described the situation as dire, as both forces have been accused of committing grave violations of human rights. The international community has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians caught in the crossfire. The plight of the people of Wad Madani underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan.
