Pakistan's Supreme Court upholds death penalty for former ruler General Pervez Musharraf despite his passing, marking the first punishment of a military chief for high treason in the country's history.
Pakistan's Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty of former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf in the high treason case, despite his passing on February 5, 2023 in Dubai after a prolonged illness. The four-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa reinstated the death sentence and dismissed appeals, overturning the Lahore High Court's previous decision to abolish the death penalty. This marked the first time in Pakistan's history that a military chief had been declared guilty and punished for high treason. Musharraf had been living in self-exile in the UAE since 2016 to evade criminal charges back home. Despite being deceased, the top court observed that there were two questions of whether an appeal could be heard after the person has passed away and if the legal heirs would be entitled to his benefits. This verdict brings a controversial chapter in Pakistan's history to a dramatic and unexpected close.
